Kestrel Meridian 14 review: the laptop that stops apologising in the second hour
It loses the benchmark and wins the afternoon. Eight weeks with the machine that holds 94% of its clocks after half an hour under load.

The Meridian 14 is three millimetres thicker and 200 grams heavier than the laptops it competes with, and it is the only one of them that is still running at full speed forty minutes into a render. Add a genuinely replaceable battery, a five-year update commitment in writing, and eleven and a half hours of real mixed-use runtime, and the case against it comes down to how it looks closed.

Sustained load is the whole review
The Meridian’s processor is not remarkable. Its cooling is. Kestrel has spent the three millimetres of extra thickness on a vapour chamber and two fans that spin up early and slowly rather than late and hard, and the result is a clock curve that is almost flat.

30-minute all-core load, 22 C ambient, on a hard surface. Reference is the mean of six 14-inch machines between $1,200 and $1,800 tested identically.
The Vector 13 wins the first sixty seconds of that test by a comfortable margin and loses the remaining twenty-nine minutes by a much larger one. Which of those numbers matters is entirely a question of what you do, and we would suggest that anyone who exports video, compiles anything, or keeps forty browser tabs open is in the second group whether they think so or not.
Battery
Eleven hours and forty minutes at 150 nits with a mixed workload — browser, editor, video call, some light compilation — across four runs that landed within eleven minutes of each other. That is the most consistent battery result we have recorded, and consistency matters more than the peak figure: a laptop that does 14 hours on a good day and 6 on a bad one is a laptop you carry a charger for.
The panel, and the one real compromise
512 nits, colour accurate enough out of the box for photo work, 120 Hz, and matte. It is a very good IPS panel and it is an IPS panel. Put it next to the Vector 13’s OLED and the blacks look grey, because they are.
For most work this is the correct trade — IPS does not burn in, holds full-field brightness better, and costs less battery. It is still the thing you will notice first if you are coming from an OLED machine, and no amount of colour accuracy argues you out of it.
Repairability
Sixteen screws, all Torx T5, all the same length. Battery out in under two minutes. Memory, storage, wireless card, fans, and speakers all socketed. The parts store lists every one of them with a price, and the service manual is a PDF rather than a support ticket.
This is not a small feature. A machine you can put a new battery into in 2029 is a different purchase from one you cannot, and the five-year update commitment means the software will still be there when you do.
The verdict
Buy this if the work matters more than the bag. The Meridian 14 is not exciting, does not photograph well, and will still be the fastest machine in the room at four in the afternoon.
